SAM Triple Bill: A Conversation with Khim Ong and Duncan Bass

Recently opened at Singapore Art Museum (SAM) is a triple bill of exhibitions, featuring renowned Singapore artist Jane Lee’s first museum solo; a presentation of Factory of the Sun, Hito Steyerl’s installation at the German Pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale; and the inaugural edition of SAM Contemporaries: Residues & Remixes, featuring nine artworks by the next generation of Singapore-based artists. ART SG speaks with Khim Ong, SAM’s Deputy Director of Collections and Public Art, and SAM curator Duncan Bass, to discuss what these presentations signal for developments in contemporary art and culture, as well as the Museum’s curatorial direction.

A Conversation With Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan

Razor-sharp sickles from Indonesian blacksmiths, rubber slippers from inmates in Singapore and used blankets from anonymous citizens in Busan. These are just a handful of the unusual materials that Filipino artists Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan use to create installations, which explore ideas of memory, displacement and home. The famed husband-and-wife duo—who have exhibited at the 2003 Venice Biennale, and numerous institutions across the globe—are also known for their participatory workshops. They have invited children and adults to help make immersive works ranging a teetering towers of cardboard homes to a giant pile of airplanes made of found objects. On the eve of their major survey exhibition at Museum MACAN in Jakarta, we speak with the artists about how they got here, what drives them and what’s next.

A Conversation With Larry Ossei-Mensah and Timothy Tan

Running through 27 June at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, Sounds of Blackness is a landmark exhibition bringing together the work of artists from the African diaspora, curated by Larry Ossei-Mensah and anchored by works from the collection of Filipino collector Timothy Tan. The exhibition, which takes its title from the name of an award-winning ensemble known for performing a broad range of musical styles, similarly seeks to encompass a diversity of creative expressions and thought, and to celebrate and share Black culture and histories with a wider audience through a sensory experience. Curator Larry Ossei-Mensah and collector Timothy Tan speak with ART SG about their aspirations for this exhibition, and the works that ignited their interest in this genre of art.
