GETTING AROUND
Singapore thrives on efficiency, and its public transport system consistently ranks among the world’s best. Navigating the city is a breeze, and visitors can also enjoy the assurance of impeccably clean streets and exceptional safety.
The city’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and bus networks run frequently and are extensive and reliable, connecting commuters to most major attractions and neighbourhoods. Tickets can be purchased at any MRT station; otherwise you may use your mobile wallet or Visa or Mastercard contactless bank cards. Click here for more details.
If you prefer a more direct mode of transport, we recommend you download the various ride-hailing apps for fast, comfortable and hassle-free rides. The most popular ones are Grab, Gojek, TADA and Zig—all of which have flexible options within the app for various vehicle types and group sizes.
DISCOVER THE ART AND CULTURE SCENE
For a small city-state, Singapore boasts an impressive number of museums (over 50) covering a staggering range of subjects and interests. These are joined by galleries and cultural precincts that celebrate the country’s rich heritage and contemporary creativity. ART SG coincides with the annual Singapore Art Week which means there are plenty of exciting exhibitions and programmes to look forward to.
At the National Gallery Singapore, discover the world’s largest collection of Singapore and Southeast Asian modern art, housed in an award-winning architectural space re-envisioning two heritage buildings. Highlights to look out for include surveys of acclaimed Singapore artists Kim Lim, Lim Tze Peng and Teo Eng Seng, as well as a spectacular rooftop commission by Aotearoa New Zealander artist Lisa Reihana.
A short walk away, explore the rich and diverse heritage of Asia through the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM)’s impressive collection of artefacts, including the famous Tang Shipwreck. Close by in the Bras Basah-Bugis precinct – the city’s art and heritage district – the Peranakan Museum is a charming small museum housed in a former school, where visitors can learn about the unique culture of the Peranakan community through exquisite artefacts and immersive exhibits. Ongoing in January 2025 is an exhibition exploring the stories of three visionary Peranakan women from Indonesia, and their innovations in the field of batik textiles.
At the southern tip of the island lies the Tanjong Pagar art precinct, where the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) is currently housed. The museum presents contemporary art from a Southeast Asian perspective, and visitors during Art Week can enjoy solo presentations by leading contemporary artists Pratchaya Phinthong (from Thailand) and Yee I-Lann (from Malaysia), as well as the homecoming of Singapore artist Robert Zhao’s presentation at the 2024 Venice Biennale. Make the most of your trip here and visit the other notable galleries that are located in the same building complex.
Art lovers should also head to Gillman Barracks, a contemporary arts enclave featuring various galleries in restored colonial-era barracks. The galleries represent artists from Singapore and around the globe, and are known for hosting cutting-edge exhibitions and programs.
